I’m excited about sharing this little piece of music for 2 reasons:
1. It marks the beginning of a whole new series of content (giving you concrete things to progress on the guitar without being too overwhelming).
2. It’s so accessible due to the easy movable chord shape (x02200) used throughout. (Guitar playing won’t get any easier.)
The piece of music (I titled it ‘I Said He’s Trouble’) you’re about to learn features:
- 1 movable chord shape using only 2 fingers,
- simple percussion,
- a combination of picking and strumming,
- muting the E string,
- position shifts,
- a slide,
- dynamic playing.
You can download it by clicking here (search for HG1 – I Said He’s Trouble).
Print it. Use it. Make notes.
In this video, you can listen to it, you can watch me play it, and I’ll teach you through it:
And here is everything else you need to know. Enjoy!
💪 Action Steps
- Memorize the movable chord shape Asus2 x02200.
- Practice the required chord changes:
Asus2 x02200 to A6sus2 x04400
A6sus2 x04400 to Am9 x05500
Am9 x05500 to A6sus2 x04400
A6sus2 x04400 to Asus2 x02200
Asus2 x02200 to Dadd9/A x00770
Dadd9/A x00770 to D7sus2/A x00550
D7sus2/A x00550 to Bb(b5)/A x00330
Bb(b5)/A x00330 to Dmaj7sus2/A x00220
Dmaj7sus2/A x00220 to Dadd9/A x00770
- Choose your preferred right-hand technique (guitar pick/fingers).
- Get familiar with the exact right-hand fingering (p=thumb, i=index, m=middle, a=ring) or picking directions (arch=down, V=up).
- Play bars 1-4. Focus on good sound and consistent rhythm.
- Play the strumming pattern of bar 5 on 1 chord only (for example A6sus2 x04400). It goes D U UD U UDU U (D=down, U=up).
- Apply the strumming pattern to bars 6-9.
- Practice bars 10-11 separately.
- Put everything together and play through the entire piece.
📈 Difficulty
2/10 (This gives you a rough idea of how difficult it is to play. If you feel it’s actually easier, great. If not, don’t feel bad.)
⏰ Time Estimation
3 days (This is a rough estimation that can vary widely. If you’re faster, great. If not, don’t feel bad.)
✏️ Extra Tips
- Place your left-hand fingers close to the fretwires to get the best sound.
- Aim for a consistently good sound and rhythm.
- Experiment with dynamics. Go loud. Go quiet. Go extreme.
- Record yourself with your phone. Listen back. It’ll be eye-opening.
