Stage 1: Nothing Goes Without The Basics

Let’s tidy up your guitar playing. In this stage, we focus on the basics: cowboy chords, smooth chord changes, strumming with great sound and rhythm, and fingerpicking. Together, we master these essentials. This lays the foundation so you can become the guitar player you want to be.

Here, you’ll learn to…

  • Find your ideal playing position.
  • Finally gain control over your fingers.
  • Tune a guitar properly (so you never sound off).
  • Play the 8 cowboy chords (cleanly and comfortably).
  • Change chords (cleanly and in time).
  • Establish counting for good rhythm.

Let’s strengthen your basics and explore what’s next. In this stage, we go beyond cowboy chords and discover what music you can create with just a few skills. The lessons are manageable and full of exciting possibilities. Each step builds on the basics, so you never feel lost.

Here, you’ll learn to…

  • Play triad shifts in E major.
  • Play the "traffic light" chords in A major.
  • Use your pinky in D major.
  • Play 2-finger chords and the major scale in G major.
  • Get the most out of C major (which is a lot!).
  • Play simple chord shifts in E minor.
  • Understand the guitar in A minor.

Let's get you to fully understand the guitar so creating music becomes second nature. In this stage, you learn how the fretboard works and how it translates into music. We cover fretboard navigation, scales, chords, harmony, and more. I show you how to read the guitar like an open book.

Here, you’ll learn to…

  • Navigate the fretboard (without getting lost).
  • Play 1 major scale pattern (which happens to cover the entire fretboard).
  • Play 1 minor scale pattern (again, which happens to cover the entire fretboard).
  • Play 1 pentatonic pattern (and again, which happens to cover the entire fretboard).
  • Build your own chords.
  • Harmonize the major scale.
  • Use harmonies (to create whichever sound you wish).
