HG25: Triads on Strings A D G – Let’s Fit These Into Your Playing

Triads are one of these major building blocks in music. They’re worth learning all across the neck.

In this lesson, you’ll learn all 6 major and minor triad shapes on strings A D G. We got to start somewhere, right?

Enjoy!

This early intermediate lesson features…

… All 3 major triad shapes on strings A D G.

… All 3 minor triad shapes on strings A D G.

… A musical application using these triads.

You can download the tabs by clicking here (search for ‘HG25 – Triads on Strings A D G – Let’s Fit These Into Your Playing’).

Download it. Print it. Use it.

In this video, you can listen to it, you can watch me play it, and I’ll teach you through it:

And here is everything else you need to know. Enjoy!

📈 Difficulty

4/10 (This gives you a rough idea of how difficult it is. If you feel it’s actually easier, great. If not, don’t feel bad.)

⏰ Time Estimation

2 Weeks (This is a rough estimation that can vary widely. If you’re faster, great. If not, don’t feel bad.)

💪 Action Steps

  1. Learn all major triad shapes including where the root note is positioned in each shape. (Broken Stairs shape: A string, E Major Lookalike: D string, The Bar: G string)

  2. Quiz yourself using random root notes. Apply all 3 major triad shapes to each root note. This will get you started: C Db G Bb F F# E C# Eb.

  3. Learn all minor triad shapes including where the root note is positioned in each shape. (Badly Broken Stairs shape: A string, E Minor Lookalike: D string, The Easier Bar: G string)

  4. Quiz yourself using random root notes. Apply all 3 minor triad shapes to each root note. This will get you started: G# Eb C# B E A Ab Gb F# F.

  5. Play the application ‘Good Vibes’. (See free tabs.)

  6. Create your own music using these triads.

✏️ Extra Tips

  • What sounds short and easy-to-do will take you a moment. Memorizing 6 chord shapes including root notes and having them instantly available takes time. Embrace the process.

  • Quizzing yourself will make these triads stick. Repeat these quizzes.

  • Playing the application will make them also stick. Plus, it gives you an idea what to do with them.

  • Creating your own music will make them stick, too. Plus, how many people do you know who can say they write their own music on guitar?

🎯 Encouragement

Triads are essential. Having them in your repertoire will pay off big time. No matter what genre comes your way. Take the time. Get them under your fingertips. And have fun using them!

Who Is This Guy?

Hi, I’m Florian,

Just a passionate guitarist since 2004, with (almost) two decades of teaching experience and two degrees in music education.

I’m the go-to guy for guitar players who…

Feel trapped in a loop of tutorials, courses, and gear, yet still sound the same as they did a year ago.

… Want to fully understand and master the guitar but don’t know where to start.

Realize it’s time to stop struggling alone and start making meaningful progress.

Since 2007, I’ve empowered guitar players to turn challenges into victories, giving them the tools to play freely and creatively—and ultimately, fall back in love with their guitar.

Still loving it!
